You're on your third recipe tab of the morning, manually copying and pasting the same prompt about ingredient substitutions into Gemini. This is the friction Chrome Skills eliminates. The new feature, rolling out to desktop Chrome today, lets you save any Gemini prompt as a reusable shortcut that executes with a single click—on any tab you're viewing.
Previously, repeating an AI task meant re-entering the same prompt each time you visited a new page. "To make this easier, we're launching Skills in Chrome, which lets you save and reuse your most helpful AI prompts and run them with a single click," said Chrome product manager Hafsah Ismail in the announcement. The feature works through Gemini's existing Chrome integration. Type forward slash (/) in the AI sidebar or click the plus button to pull up your saved Skills, then watch it execute in your current tab.
Pre-made Skills available through the Gemini sidebar include recipe optimization and YouTube video summarization, according to Wired. But the real value is in saving your own workflows. Any prompt you find yourself reusing—research summaries, content comparisons, translation requests—becomes a one-click action.
The change isn't what Skills enables. It's what it removes. Copy-pasting between tabs is a small friction, but friction adds up. By eliminating it, Google transforms AI from something you consciously invoke into something woven into your browsing rhythm. This is Google's actual strategy: make AI reflexive rather than intentional. Every saved Skill is a micro-decision removed from your workflow, and every micro-decision removed is a step toward habit.
Skills sync across devices when logged into your Google account. There's no additional cost—it's bundled into Chrome. For the billion-plus Chrome users worldwide, the only barrier to adoption is knowing the feature exists.
The comparison to competitors matters. Other browsers and AI tools still treat prompts as isolated interactions. Chrome Skills reframes AI as persistent infrastructure within your browser. That's a fundamentally different user experience—one where AI assistance becomes default rather than optional.
The catch is obvious: this only works when Gemini is active and you're signed in. AI remains a layer on top of browsing, not the substrate beneath it. But if Google gets this right—the timing, the prompt quality, the reliability—this feature could be the mechanism that shifts AI from occasional tool to constant companion. Every Chrome session becomes, by default, an AI session. That's a habit only Google controls.
